Why

As stated in your own literature, your presence in the industry has secured Fedex employees the same virtual benefits and pay scales as UPS, PURO. Why then would I want to join as these are now entrenched and labour laws permit me to pursue any company wrong doings for what I am sure is a small union fee that . I quite frankly do not see any real positive aspects of the teamsters. Dispell any of the above please...My husband worked for Russel Metals under the CAW union....solution after brilliant(!) negotiations...close down two shifts. Nice work boys.....

Teamsters Response:

I can’t speak for your husbands’ situation at Russel Metals or the CAW as I don’t know the details? All I can say is the manufacturing sector was hit hard with laws that made it easier to send work to other countries that pay their workers close to nothing. If that is the cause for fewer shifts I would be looking at government policy as the problem opposed to the union.

To answer your questions, FedEx used to pay similar to UPS and Purolator but over the years that has been reduced on many fronts-… primarily benefits, pension and wage increases. I can tell you the law can’t protect you against any other changes that FedEx may want to make as long as they don’t dip below minimum wage or violate health and safety regulations.

Just as an example Purolator employees negotiated a 12.25% raise, improved benefits, and a 20% increase in pension contributions all paid 100% by the company in a 4 year contract. The average FedEx employee received 1-1.5% raise and a reduction of 30% into their pension.

In closing, it’s a dangerous gamble not to unionize when working for a big corporation. You never know if more will be taken from you.

Myth #1: The union just wants your dues money

The truth is... As newly organized Teamsters, you won’t pay union dues until you’ve negotiated and voted to approve your first contract – and decided for yourselves whether it’s worth it. Read more >
