Casual emp/partime VS Fulltime emp
Casual and p/t emp's are getting 8-10 hours a day at the Cambridge location.. fulltime are getting less than 8 .. this isn't fair .. we are getting letters in our file if we do not take our 1 hour manditory break , the casuals and p/t do not follow the same rules .. having a union .. how would this change ? Are they using the casual more because they do not have to pay them benefits or contribute to the pension plan for these emp's ... what could the union do to change this?
Teamsters Response:
Those issues are covered in both the UPS and Purolator contracts so lets give you some examples of how it would play out.
UPS When a p/t driver at UPS works over 1,950 hours in a year the company must post a full-time position that has an 8hrs guarantee per day. The route or position is offered by seniority to the full-time drivers first then the left over full-time vacancy is offered to the part-time drivers by seniority. (also if the p/t driver wants to remain p/t he/she can do so.)- There are no "casuals" at UPS
Purolator When any position works more than one (1) hours over his/her hour-band in any given quarter of a year that position must be posted at the higher hour band and the affected employee would have the right to bump anyone with less seniority in his/her classification. The collective agreement also maximizes 8 hrs bands unless an employee wishes to remain at a lower hour band.-There are no casuals at Purolator except B.C......if a casual averages 3 or more hours a day over a quarter year he/she is considered a regular employee entitled to full benefits, pay, and pension. The worker is also assigned an hour-band.
