Are membership and associated dues compulsory if the facility becomes unionized?

In our free enterprise system I expect to retain my rights to continue my business relationship with FedEx Ground at the same facility and in the same manner as already established - I've been an independent contractor with them for more than seventeen years. I have no intentions of ever being a part of any organized collective bargaining unit and I never have considered such a thing. If the Teamsters are really looking out for my best interests, they cannot dictate either that I must belong to the union if one exists or be subject to any kind of dues resulting from it. FedEx must be allowed to carry on their business arrangement with me and this must in no way be jeopardized by any terms written into a collective agreement. Not one single person in my facility has been there longer than me - I'm a 'cornerstone' contractor. It's been my experience that when a workforce is on strike they can and do trample on my rights to conduct my business as I see fit. They may be within their rights to withhold their services from the Company until a settlement has been reached, but how dare they refuse me free access to go about my business if I choose not to support their cause - I have freedom of choice - and I don't care to hear their grievances. I earn my living based on revenue earned based on packages and stops and when they impede my ability to conduct my own business for a profit because their issues are more important - well - you can imagine how that infuriates me. If this were ever to happen at my own place of business, it would be an absolute abomination. If the Teamsters are as benevolent as they claim, I will not suffer from unionization in any way, shape, or form. Please respond to this on the forum where everyone considering organizing can see your comments. Thank you.

Teamsters Response:

The law is quite clear on organizing under the Canada Labour Code, If 50% plus 1 decide on unionizing then everyone in that group is unionized and that includes owner/operators and/or their relief drivers if they are deemed part of the proposed bargaining unit. If 50% or less want to unionize then nobody in the proposed bargaining unit can join.

The possitive result for you is your 17 year senioirty would be in a legal binding contract and the company would have to negotiate raises and any issues you may have as an owner/operator.

On the strike issue 95% of contracts are settled without a strike...however if one were to occure and you were involved you would be impacted.

In closing, I'm sorry you don't care about other peoples issues/grievances. I have always believed in the "all for one...,one for all" principal that unionization brings to the workplace. However, I understand that some people don't share that belief and that's why we have a Labour Code based on the 50% plus 1 model.

Myth #4: FedEx management say’s it will close any unionized terminal

It is against the law to say that or any threat.  FedEx hasn’t closed its unionized European operations nor have they eliminated their unionized pilots.  So why would they shut you down?  The answer is simple: “it’s only a scare tactic”.
