Teamsters Canada Response:

Interesting comment. I'm not sure who you've talked to but let me respond from the perspective as a former Purolator employee. When I first started at Purolator in 1995 the employees had chosen to unionize 5 years earlier. When the company was first unionized the benefits were pathetic as was the pension. At that time Federal Express employees had superior pay, pension and benefits. Over the coarse of time through the negotiation process the employees have remained strong and unified producing far superior pay, and a strong pension plan that is 100% paid by the company. The benefits are about the same as the FedEx family plan with one very big difference being that the Purolator plan is also 100% paid by the company.
Well what does this all mean? Let’s do a comparison of a full-time Purolator courier with a full-time FedEx courier.
THAT’S RIGHT A F/T PUROLATOR COURIER MAKES $6,082.50 MORE MONEY PER YEAR THEN YOU DO!!

(Based on a 8 hrs shift 5 days per week)

  • 100% paid benefits are worth $65 a month to each F/T Purolator Courier.
  • 100% paid pension plan is worth $70 a month to each F/T Purolator Courier.
  • To have the same wage as the average F/T Purolator Courier you would have to make $24.37 per hrs.

SO LET’S DO THE MATH

  • $24.37 per hrs (Ave. Teamsters Purolator Rate) minus $23 per hrs (Ave. FedEx Rate) = $1.37 per hrs.
  • Break the deductions of the average FedEx pay period down to an hourly deduction. It costs the average FedEx F/T Driver approx .40 cents per hour for option 2 health and welfare coverage. It costs the average F/T FedEx driver approx .75 cents per hour in pension contributions. Ok, so that equals approx. $1.15 per hour in deductions for the average F/T FedEx Driver.
  • $23 per hrs (F/T FedEx Driver) minus (-) $1.15 per hrs in deductions = $21.85 per hrs after deductions.
  • $24.37 per hrs (F/T Purolator Driver) minus (-) $21.85 (F/T FedEx Driver) = $2.52 per hour difference.
  • $2.52 x 40 hrs x 52 weeks = $5,241.60 per year.
  • $5,241.60 plus the value of 100% paid benefits and pension = $135 a month or $1,620 a year.
  • $5,241.60 plus $1,620 = $6,861.60

THE END RESULT

$6,861.60 - $ 779.10 (union dues) = $6,082.50 more money in your pocket per year.
