For the first time in the history of organized labour in Canada, FedEx workers have decided to join a union, and they have chosen the Teamsters…....Laval, February 21, 2010 – For the first time in the history of organized labour in Canada, FedEx workers have decided to join a union, and they have chosen the Teamsters.

The Teamsters Union filed an application for certification with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to represent around 45 FedEx administrative workers based in Mississauga, Ontario.

“I would like to congratulate these men and women who had the courage to stand up to their employer, well known for his anti-unionism,” states James P. Hoffa, general president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. “Signing a card is the first step to improving their work conditions.”

Several reasons motivated these FedEx workers to unionize, namely a $16,000 annual wage disparity with similar workers employed by Purolator.

“The campaign is far from over,” adds Robert Bouvier, president of Teamsters Canada. “Dozens of organizers and members are hard at work throughout the country to try to convince other FedEx workers that it is in their best interest to join the Teamsters.”

The CIRB is expected to render its decision within the next few weeks.

Pour la première fois dans l’histoire du mouvement syndical au Canada, des travailleurs de la société FedEx ont décidé de se syndiquer et ils ont opté pour les Teamsters…

Laval, le 21 février 2010 – Pour la première fois dans l’histoire du mouvement syndical au Canada, des travailleurs de la société FedEx ont décidé de se syndiquer et ils ont opté pour les Teamsters.

Le syndicat des Teamsters a déposé une requête en accréditation auprès du Conseil canadien des relations industrielles (CCRI) le 12 février dernier afin de représenter les quelque 45 travailleurs administratifs du terminal FedEx à Mississauga, en Ontario.

C’est la première fois dans l’histoire du mouvement syndical au Canada que des travailleurs de la société FedEx décident de se syndiquer, et ils ont opté pour les Teamsters.

« Je tiens à féliciter ces hommes et ces femmes qui ont eu le courage de se tenir debout devant un employeur pourtant bien connu pour son attitude antisyndicale, se réjouit James P. Hoffa, président général de la Fraternité internationale des Teamsters. Signer une carte est la première étape pour se donner de meilleures conditions de travail. »

De fait, plusieurs raisons expliquent la décision des travailleurs de FedEx, notamment une disparité salariale annuelle atteignant 16 000 $ par rapport aux travailleurs à l’emploi de Purolator qui accomplissent des tâches similaires.

« La campagne est loin d’être terminée, ajoute Robert Bouvier, président de Teamsters Canada. Des dizaines de recruteurs et de membres sont à pied d’œuvre partout au pays pour tenter de convaincre les autres travailleurs de FedEx qu’il est dans leur intérêt de devenir membres des Teamsters.»

Le CCRI rendra vraisemblablement une décision dans ce dossier d’ici quelques semaines.
