Cold war and Communism tactics
While working a fedex over the past 10 years I used to hear disturbing rumors that "Toronto" had a file on every Fedex employee.I used to hear,"watch it,everything you do and say will be noted in a file at headquarters" I would ask myself "why?."This is not cold war East Germany or Russia. "naw" I would say. But,Just like out of a movie about the cold war with its spies,Gestapo,Communism ,hostility, strife and enmity I found out that this rumor is quite in fact true. My Manager told our group a few weeks ago that "every year, all manger's must submit an updated file on all His/Her employees to Headquarters". I don't understand why they have to do this, but I guess what goes around(cold war), comes around. Now I have to wonder what other police state methods can Fedex be up too?
Teamsters Canada Response:
Many employers keep records on their employees and will use such information in disciplinary actions. In unionized companies such as Purolator and UPS information such as discipline become null and void after one year and is removed from the employees file. Furthermore, upon giving two days notice, employees at Purolator and UPS can review their files to make sure there is no discipline over a year old in their files. This right is contained in most collective agreements.

The law protects you
The Canada Labour Code makes it crystal clear that you are protected from intimidation or worse from your employer as you consider joining a union. Here's what it has to say.
No employer or person acting on behalf of an employer shall:
(a) refuse to employ or to continue to employ or suspend, transfer, lay off or otherwise discriminate against any person with respect to employment, pay or any other term or condition of employment or intimidate, threaten or otherwise discipline any person, because the person
(i) is or proposes to become, or seeks to induce any other person to become, a member, officer or representative of a trade union or participates in the promotion, formation or administration of a trade union.
