Seniority policy for full time vs part time employees

Is the seniority of full time and part time employee based on date of hire or hours worked ? The reason I ask, there are many employees at FedEx that have worked 10 and 20 plus years as part time, with a second full time job elsewhere. Are those part time employees going to see an impact on their seniority status if a union is successfully formed? Thanks...

Teamsters Response:

Great question!

The question of how seniority works will be determined by the FedEx workers as it is the workers who will determine this and other issues in their collective agreement.

No matter what system the workers choose, whether it’s classification, overall, hours worked, or some other system seniority ensures the company does things fairly and without bias so you know where you stand on matters such as job bids, work preference, lay-offs, recalls, and vacation selection.

As I don't know the system that the majority of the work force want I can't comment on the final outcome.

Myth #2: The union will make you go on strike

The truth is... Strikes are a rare last resort in contract negotiations – more than 95% of Teamster contracts are negotiated without a strike.  A strike will only happen when a majority of workers vote to call one. Read more >
